The raspberry is an edible fruit of the genus Rubus and therefore related to the Blackberry. Raspberries are perennial plants with woody stems.

A member of the Rosacea family, raspberries have a sweet intense taste. They are considered to be the finest flavoured of all the berries.

Raspberries grow well in cool, damp areas, and the most common red varieties are usually found in shops. You can also find black, yellow and golden cultivars however.

Raspberries are an essential ingredient in the classic English dessert, Summer pudding.Their flavour combines well with that of other berries 

Nutritional Value of Raspberries

Raw raspberries comprise 86% water, 12% carbohydrate, and have about 1% each of protein and fat. In a 100 gram amount, raspberries supply 53 calories and 6.5 grams of essential, daily dietary fibre.

The aggregate fruit structure contributes to raspberry's nutritional value, as it increases the proportion of dietary fibre, which is among the highest known in whole foods, up to 6% fiber per total weight. 

Raspberries are a rich source of vitamin C, manganese and dietary fibre. in addition, Raspberries are a low-glycemic index food, with total sugar content of only 4% and no starch.

Raspberry Culinary Uses

Raspberries are larger and less seedy in comparison to blackberries. The bright red berries are sweet and juicy and perfect to eat on their own. 

Cooked red raspberries are used in desserts, made into sauces, jellies and jams, served as a topping on ice cream, pancakes and waffles, and may be used to flavor many other foods.
